“Hi Nadia, I don’t know you personally and I don’t expect an answer.
That’s a great statement you made here. But in all honesty – do you really believe as a single person you can change anything here on Instagram? Raise your voice for what?
You are absolutely right, it would be easiest to just share pretty images and be content – that’s what Instagram was made for in the first place.
If I look at all the images people share on Instagram to provoke compassion, from attacks in Europe or the middle east – personally I find it all useless.
Does a simple ‘PRAY FOR’ change anything? NO! People should instead go and vote and let their politicians know what they think. There is so much in politics that scares me – and politicians just keep silent?
Back to Instagram: I limit myself to just share pretty pictures, wether others like it or not. I would love to comment my opinion under a lot of things – but does anyone care about what I think? I don’t think so.
Which ones are the most liked images on Instagram? Pretty young girls. Is that art? I don’t think so, but sex still sells. That is the sad reality.
This photography industry is so annoying, with people asking for free shoots, always bargaining, photographers overusing photoshop – I have tried to discuss this with a lot of people and never succeeded. So I just remain silent now.
…. I would love to vent about this and more but I don’t because it doesn’t help and nobody cares.
Just wanted to share my opinion with you, with no claim of being right. I am happy for you and your success.”
thanks for your message. I really appreciate it! And I understand your frustration. I really do. I think we all feel it sometimes.
But I want to invite you to take on a new perspective. Do I believe a single person can change something using Instagram?
Yes I do.
I want to leave my mark, change this industry I am in and make a change in the world that is within my reach – all that cheese yes, I want to do it. This is how: this is how you change companies or trends and cultures – by influencing single people, one by one.
Change and revolutions take time, they often happen in small things and often times you don’t see them right away. You start feeling the repercussions once it hits more and more people.
I used to ask myself the same question you just sent me.
I don’t do that anymore. I know now how the things I share on whatever channel and in person can influence people. I don’t think I will ever know the full reach of where my words go, but a lot of people are gracious enough to let me know how they have changed their business, their habits, their work and their lives because of something they read on my blog/ newsletter/Instagram/something I said somewhere.
It is crazy but it makes sense. I am influenced in the same way by others that I am friends with or that I follow online. It could be anyone and it doesn’t have to come from someone with a big audience. Influence happens when passion is involved.
These are small revolutions, that are unseen first, but they will become visible once they affect more people.
A few months ago a lovely woman on Snapchat sent me a message saying:
‘Thank you. I just wanted to say you are our biggest influence in our home. When I say ‘our’ I mean me and my daughters, they are little, they don’t actually watch you, but I do and I am their biggest influence and you are mine and you know how it goes…’
How do you change an industry? A company? The world?
By influencing one person. That’s how it goes.
If you are frustrated and think you can’t move anything. You are wrong. Even with a negative attitude you will influence someone. You always do. You never know how far your reach is and where your influence will go.
You know, it’s not about simply ‘venting’ and giving a frustrated opinion under somebody’s post. Of course people won’t listen to that.
Unhappy with the status quo? There are things you want to change and you are looking for likeminded people? Start by saying what you stand for and what you believe. Don’t put people down, don’t complain – instead shift the focus to what could be. To what you want to be known for. Give your voice to the future and to the change you want to see happening.
Share what you believe in. Share what you value and WHY.
That’s what you have to tell the world out there. Don’t underestimate your voice. When you are speaking your heart, I promise you that has the potential to change something. Always.
